There are 467 wine appellations administered under the system of Appellation d’ Origin Controlee (AOC) created in the 1920’s. The French wanted to establish standards for the quality of wines produced in the country. Everything is controlled, from the grapes used, to the density of vines , to the number of bottles a vintner may produce per hectare.
